Why it is so dangerous to get dehydrated?

What is dehydration?

When it’s very hot outside and you’ve been sweating, you get thirsty. Why? Thirst can be a sign of dehydration. Being dehydrated means your body doesn’t have enough water to keep working properly.

You get water by drinking and eating. And you lose it by sweating, peeing (peeing), having diarrhea, or vomiting. You even lose a little water by breathing.

Our bodies need water to function properly. We usually replenish the water we lose, like when you come home and drink a good glass of fresh water. If you don’t replenish the water your body has lost, you might start to feel bad. And, if you spend too much time without the water you need, you could get very sick and even have to go to the hospital.

Why i get dehydrated?

Many times children get dehydrated when they are having a great time playing in an active way. Have you ever been red as a tomato and sweaty as a chicken while playing with your friends? This usually happens when it’s very hot outside, but it can also happen in enclosed spaces, for example, playing basketball in a gym.

Children can also become dehydrated when they are sick. If you have a stomach or intestinal virus, you may vomit and/or have diarrhea. On top of that, you probably don’t want to eat too much or drink too much.

If your throat hurts, it may be hard to swallow when you eat or drink. And, if you have a fever, you will lose fluid in the form of sweat, when the water evaporates from your skin while your body tries to lower its temperature. That’s why your parents tell you to drink plenty of fluids when you’re sick.

What are the signs of dehydration?

Thirst is the main clue. Here are some other signs that a person may be dehydrated:

  • be dizzy, tired or have the feeling that your head is going

  • accelerated heart rate

  • dry mouth and lips

  • Another sign of dehydration is urinating less than usual or making a dark or smelly pee (normally, the pee is light yellow).

What should i do?

It’s best to avoid getting dehydrated in the first place. If you’re going to be outdoors, it’s important to drink water before, during, and after playing, especially if it’s hot. Dehydration can occur along with heat-related illnesses, such as heat stroke and sunstroke.

Is it true you have to drink eight glasses of water a day? No, but you need to drink enough to quench the thirst and maybe a little more if you’re sick or exercising. It is also advisable to wear fresh and loose clothes and take regular breaks indoors or, at least, in the shade.

If you’re sick, don’t stop taking small sips of liquid, such as water or diluted juice, even if you’re not thirsty or hungry. Taking a polo shirt is a great way to get fluids. Other foods, such as fruit, vegetables, and vegetables, are also rich in water, but if your stomach hurts, you may not want to eat them.

Limit soft drinks and sugary drinks, such as fruit juices, soda, lemonade, and iced tea. These drinks contain too much sugar your body doesn’t need. Some also contain caffeine, which can make you urinate a lot. I mean, caffeine tells your body to flush out fluid. And, as you know, that’s the opposite of what you need to do when you’re dehydrated!

Do i need to see a doctor?

Some cases of dehydration can be treated at home. But sometimes that’s not enough for a child to feel better. A child may need to go to a doctor or emergency room if he or she has a heat-related illness or if he or she has contracted a virus that causes vomiting and/or diarrhea that does not go away.

The good news is that hospitals have a way to put fluid into the body called an "IV" (IV). An IV is a special tube (such as a thin straw) that is inserted directly into a vein, allowing the fluid to go directly to the parts of the body that need it the most. It may be a little annoying when the nurse puts it on, but it will help you feel much better.
