DIABETES TYPE 1

Diabetes occurs when your blood glucose level, also called blood sugar, is too high. Blood glucose is your main source of energy and comes mainly from the food you eat.

Insulin, a hormone made by the pancreas, helps blood glucose enter the cells to be used as energy.

Another hormone, glucagon, works with insulin to control blood glucose levels.

DIABETES TYPE 2

Type 2 diabetes occurs when the body does not make enough insulin and/or does not respond well to the insulin it produces. About 90% to 95% of people with diabetes have type 2 diabetes.

People are usually diagnosed with type 2 diabetes after age 40, although it is now also seen in children and teens.

This type of diabetes is associated with excess body weight and, in most people, can be prevented by following a healthy eating plan, exercising regularly, and maintaining a healthy weight.

PREDIABETES

Prediabetes means that your blood glucose levels are higher than normal, but lower than if you had type 2 diabetes. Prediabetes is also called glucose intolerance or glucose alteration.

¡Care! 7 out of 10 people with prediabetes develop diabetes.  Although studies do make lifestyle changes people with prediabetes can prevent and/ or delay the development of type 2 diabetes up to nearly 58%
